This spring garden backyard wedding was truly a DIY masterpiece! From the planning to the florals to the wood carved guest book, this bride and groom did not skip any area that could be DIY’d. I am in awe of this couple’s skill and dedication to make their wedding day a dream come true.

Juliana and Ziggy’s spring garden themed backyard wedding was beautiful thanks in part to their creativity and resourcefulness. With a little help from close friends and family, this romantic wedding day was truly perfection and personalized to both the bride and groom.

Ceremony

On a perfect spring afternoon in Texas, guests began to trickle into the backyard venue for Juliana and Ziggy’s nuptials. Upon arrival, a live-edge wooden sign greeted attendees with the message, “Pick a seat, not a side, we are all family once the knot is tied,” and the hosts encouraged everyone to find their seats.

Shortly after everyone takes their seats, the wedding ceremony begins. Ziggy makes his way down the aisle, accompanied by his uncle, who also served as their officiant. Next were Juliana’s daughters, each donned in a long, dusty pink gown and holding a flower bouquet hoop. Finally, Juliana began her walk with a custom ivory wedding gown and pearl accented veil.

Juliana wrote the script for the officiant, adding in some personalization and a bit of humor. Ziggy didn’t proof the script, so he was just as surprised as the guests with the stories shared throughout the ceremony! Even with the integrated humor, adrenaline began to kick in during the final moments. Juliana was so nervous as they exchanged rings, she asked Ziggy if he was sure it was his left hand!

Once Ziggy and Juliana exchanged vows and the officiant pronounced them “husband and wife,” they shared their first kiss as a married couple. After a few photos just with just the newlyweds, it was time for the reception to begin!

Reception

As guests migrated from the ceremony seating to the reception area, the hosts encouraged them to help themselves to a beverage at the DIY bar cart. A sign reading “Cheers” hung above a side bar displaying the beverage options.

For dessert, Juliana and Ziggy provided a dessert table with a cornucopia of confections. A sign reading “Love is Sweet” was hanging above the sweet treats, which included cookies, mini cupcakes, brownies, and more.

The couple invited guests to adopt a pothos plant as their take-away wedding favor. There was a table displaying the propagated plants in varying amber and pink vases for guests to choose from.

The DIY’d guest book was incredible! This labor-of-love started as a walnut “cookie”, or tree cross-section, handpicked by Juliana and Ziggy. Using their CNC machine, courtesy of Ziggy’s “Z’s Woodshop” , the newlyweds engraved “Jewels + Ziggy 5.10.25” plus two little bees on the lefthand side, sealing the customization with epoxy resin.

They also used their CNC to create the honeycomb look of hexagon cut-outs throughout the cross-section. The wood inserts, made from poplar wood, were available to be filled in with guest’s names, then placed into the honeycomb cut-outs.

This guest book is a beautiful piece of art, and a great way to remember those who celebrated with Juliana and Ziggy on their big day!

Dinner was catered by Backyard BBQ, with a classic Texas brisket as the star. Of course, you cannot serve barbecue without also including the beans, bread, potato salad and other accoutrements.

Juliana and Ziggy danced the night away under spring time stars, while guests either joined them on the impromptu dance floor or played lawn games. Towards the end of the night, they brought out foam glow sticks for some additional fun in the evening. Such a perfect wedding day!

Planning + Logistics: Spring Garden Backyard Wedding

Backyard Wedding Venue

Juliana knew she wanted to get married at Ziggy’s aunt’s house the moment she saw it, years before their wedding day. With a “spring garden” theme to their wedding, the backyard of this Texas home was beyond perfect with a manicured lawn, mature trees and space to host over 50 people.

DIYs for Spring Garden Backyard Wedding

Just about every aspect of this wedding had details that were DIY’d by either Juliana or Ziggy. As mentioned earlier, the newlyweds designed and created the amazing wood guest book themselves—but that was just one of the many projects they tackled together.

Since they own their own CNC machine, Juliana and Ziggy were able to cut two of their signs, “Love is Sweet” and “Better Together”, and stain them themselves. Chelsea, one of Juliana’s best friends, owns Southern Fried Paper out of Dallas, TX, and she gifted her designed “Cheers” sign to Juliana & Ziggy.

Juliana also hung all the curtains and arranged all the flowers. Finding the flowers was a feat in and of itself! Juliana took time to source most of the faux flowers used for the wedding from other brides via Marketplace or within Wedding Groups on Facebook. To supplement these findings, Juliana also sourced florals from Goodwill, Temu and local dollar stores.

Music was also DIY’d by the couple, with multiple playlists labeled for Juliana’s best friends to cue at the appropriate times. Juliana and Ziggy had guests submit song requests on their RSVPs to ensure their playlists would be enjoyed by all. To keep with the theme of the day, they added some romantic wedding songs as well.

Honest Q+A with the Newlyweds

Q:  What was the most exciting extra part of your wedding day beyond saying “I Do”?

A:  [Juliana] Celebrating with friends and family. [Ziggy] Throwing foam glow sticks into the trees in the yard and trying to get them stuck. It was hilarious!

Q:  What was the biggest surprise or unexpected event that happened the day of your beautiful backyard wedding?

A:  [Juliana] How not stressed I was! I was nervous, but strangely calm. [Ziggy] A rumor getting back to my bride that I was drunk. She was stuck in the bridal suite and had to send out a “spy” – her oldest daughter – to find out the truth. She reported back, “He’s just super happy!”

Q:  Was there anything that you thought would be a big deal that turned out to be minimal?

A:  [Juliana] Not having a day-of coordinator. Oh, and catering canceling two days before our wedding and having to source a backup caterer. [Ziggy] Nope!

Q:  What was the most troublesome part of planning your wedding day?

A:  [Juliana] Stressing over last minute things I needed my groom’s assistance with. He’s a last-minute guy and I’m a control type-A personality. I laugh about it now, but in the moment I was stressed. [Ziggy] Nothing, I didn’t have to plan it!

Q:  What advice would you give a new couple approaching their own wedding day?

A:  [Juliana] Just breathe and remember you’re marrying your best friend at the end of the day. [Ziggy] Let your future bride plan everything and just show up when you’re supposed to! [Juliana] *LMAO* Typical!

Oh, I love this! All the really cool DIY details are fantastic. Totally my style. This would be my style of wedding if I was getting married, but alas, I’m past that and not going there again, lol. It’s my kid’s turns now. That guest book looks awesome and I love that ‘Better Together’ corner setup. So Cozy! Great photos and great reading too!
